PHIL Lane and Dennis Morse won a four-ball better-ball at Worcester’s Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park.

Sixteen pairs, with each golfer playing off 90 per cent of their full handicap, took on the course, opposition and dismal weather.

Lane (15 handicap) and Morse (14) combined their experience on a wild, wintry morning to take a well-deserved, countback win with a respectable 64 nett.

The duo carded a decent score on the front nine but then really got their act together and piled on relentless pressure to complete the round in fine style.

Tied on 64 were Richard Cumming (28) and Tony Cooper (22) who played consistent golf but could not quite find the cups early enough on the way in.

They were nudged down to second place based on the score from the last nine holes.

Steve Baylis (7) and Tom Gregory (22) were early clubhouse leaders with 66 but could only watch as their score was beaten.

Phil Kupfer (8) and Mike Williams (20) took fourth on countback ahead of Mick Huggins and Norman Vernalls.

Despite a poor 17th hole, which was playing long into the gale-like wind, Kupfer and Williams held on by one shot over the back nine.

Brian Hodgetts and Geoff Edge and John Hine and Bill Kelly finished on 68 and 69 respectively.

Seven pairs matched or beat nett par for the course.

With just one more round still to play, Mike Sanders (25) conquered hard ground and unreceptive greens to take the win in the sixth stage with 38 points.

Although he could only claim one par on his card, Sanders used his shots-in-hand better than the rest of the 42-strong field.

He scored well with just one single-point hole on the 13th and a no-score on the ninth.

Lane (15) took second when he returned 37 as only one of two to match or beat nett par.

He carded five pars and dropped in two birdies on the 15th and 18th holes.

Third and fourth was close as five finished on 35 in Jan Schutte, Richard Palfrey, Tommy Hayes, Vernalls and Hodgetts.

Countback gave Schutte (18) third place based on his last nine-hole tally of 20 by one point from Palfrey (20).
