RED-faced TV bosses have come under fire after telling viewers one of Worcestershire's famed historical landmarks is in SHROPSHIRE.

The lavish grounds of Croome Court, near Pershore, attract tourists from across Britain eager to see one of Middle England's real gems.

Yet nobody appeared to have told celebrity gardener and writer Alan Titchmarsh, resulting in an embarrassing faux pas.

On Tuesday night the first episode of his new series 'Secrets of the National Trust with Alan Titchmarsh' went out on Channel 5, where viewers were told they were "heading north-west to Shropshire" to visit Croome Court.

The error has bemused the leader of Worcester City Council, Cllr Adrian Gregson, who has called for an apology.

And the Worcester News can reveal how the producers have even decided to "redo" the online version of the show, so Mr Titchmarsh's voiceover is changed to correct the mistake.

Cllr Adrian Gregson said: "It's an appalling, fundamental error which must be rectified.

"How can we make Worcestershire a place to visit, when national figures such as him get the location so badly incorrect?"

Bosses at Croome Court have called Tuesday night's mistake "regrettable".

Michael Forster-Smith, Croome’s general manager, said: "Croome is very proud of being in Worcestershire.

"Although Tuesday night’s episode mentioning us being located in Shropshire was regrettable, we have been extremely active in our publicity and social media to highlight that Croome is most definitely a Worcestershire gem."

A spokesman for Channel 5 said the mistake was down to a scriptwriter's error, which will be corrected for people watching it back online.

A statement from Spun Gold TV, the producers of the show, said: "We made a mistake with the script.

"We’d like to thank the good people of Worcestershire for putting us right on this one, rest assured our researchers will be going back to geography school!"

During the show, presenter Anneka Rice revealed how Capability Brown designed the property, and spent some time rowing along the river that goes through the parkland.
