CARE home residents were joined by school children to celebrate this year's World Read Aloud Day.

Residents at Care UK’s Perry Manor Care Home enjoyed a day of literature-based activities with students from Lyppard Grange Primary School.

The pupils from Key Stage 1 read to the residents of the Charles Hastings Way home and took part in interactive reading sessions.

Home manager, Katherine Matthews, said: “It may come as a surprise to many just how beneficial reading aloud can be for older people; particularly those living with dementia.

"Here at Perry Manor interactive reading sessions are very important to us as they help to engage residents and encourage communication.

“We had a brilliant day of storytelling with the students from Lyppard Grange Primary School.

"The residents really enjoyed being read to and shared their own stories with the younger generation.”

The residents also had a free screening of a short film created by Care UK and featuring international storyteller laureate, Taffy Thomas MBE.

In the film, Mr Thomas, the patron of The Society for Storytelling, provided his top tips and advice for reading and explained the benefits of reading aloud to older people.

World Read Aloud Day encourages children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words.
