HISTORIC doors that were smashed down by thieves have been replaced at a cinema.

The original 1932 doors at Regal Cinema were damaged by burglars in July 2016 but new doors to replicate them have been fitted and are now fully functional.

The £10,000 doors were funded by the cinema and they have managed to re-use the original door handles and maintain the 1930s art deco style, for which the cinema is famous for.

Laura Clifford, marketing manager for Regal Cinema said: "In our continued restoration efforts, we have re-used the original door handles and maintained the art deco style with fittings which suit the period, whilst improving their security."

Hooded burglars raided the cinema in July and stole money from collection boxes which was being raised for an extension to the building in addition to smashing the doors.

Ms Clifford added: "The story generated a lot of interest from the community and we would like to update our supporters to let them know that we have now fitted replacement doors."

The doors took four weeks to remake to the same style as the original doors and a week for two craftsmen to fit the doors.
