STAFF at a new fish and chip shop served up the first portion to the Mayor of Worcester during the grand opening ceremony.

Newtown Fryer, in Newtown Road, Worcester, threw open its doors for business on Monday, February 20 – welcoming in a queue of hungry customers.

The business belongs to brothers Saewan, Karwan and Karzan Jaff, who have 15 years' experience working for fish and chip shops across Worcester.

After spotting the vacant unit, the trio decided to breathe new life into the building – while creating six new jobs for the area.

Saewan Jaff said he was "excited" to open the fish and chip shop, after months of hard work preparing for the grand opening.

He said: "It is a project that has been a number of months in the making. A lot of hard work has been put in here.

"There is no fish and chip shop around this catchment area. [It is] something the area really needed.

"We pride ourselves on quality and quantity. Everything is cooked fresh everyday."

And he hopes the family's "secret, unique" batter recipe with keep customers coming back for more of their freshly-cooked fish.

Councillor Paul Denham, Mayor of Worcester, was at the opening with his wife, Councillor Lynn Denham.

"It is great to welcome a new business in Worcester," he said. "I was treated to a portion of fish and chips when I was there. I can certainly say they are absolutely delicious.

"It is a very nicely laid out, sparkling new shop and I'm sure it will do very well.

"It is in an area which currently doesn't have a fish and chip shop.

"I'm sure there will be occasions after late night meetings in the Guildhall when I will pop in there on the way home."
