A MAN was rescued from the river Severn in the early hours of this morning.

Specialist boat crews from the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service rescued the 30-year-old man from the water near New Road in Worcester.

It is understood that the man fell into the water and suffered only minor injuries.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they received a call at 4.26am from the fire service.

An ambulance and paramedic area support officer attended.

The man was taken by ambulance to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

His condition is not known at this stage but he was described by the ambulance service as conscious.

Water rescue crews from Worcester, Droitwich and Malvern were involved in the rescue.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police, also present at the scene, said: "Shortly after 4am this morning West Mercia Police responded to a report that a man had entered the River Severn at New Road, Worcester.

"Police officers worked with Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue boat crews to rescue the 30-year-old man from the water.

"He was treated at the scene by West Midlands Ambulance Service and taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries."
