PARAMEDICS brought a cyclist back to life after he had a suspected cardiac arrest and fell off his bike.

The 57-year-old man also suffered a head injury and was flown to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Birmingham.

The incident happened at around 9.59am during a cycle event in Greenhill, Evesham, on Sunday, April 2.

Other cyclists on the Blossom Trail Bikeaway ride have been commended for trying to revive the man before the paramedics arrived.

Midlands Air Ambulance sent two helicopters, one from Cosford and another from Strensham, to the scene.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "His heart started beating again when our staff were treating him.

"But that shouldn't undermine the part others played before we arrived as early intervention is key when someone suffers a cardiac arrest.

"CPR and advanced life support was carried out on the man, and crews successfully managed to restart his heart.

"Given the man had fallen from his bike, there was concern about other injuries suffered, and the man was suffering from a reduced level of consciousness, so the decision was made to anaesthetise him at the scene."

Neither the police nor the ambulance service could provide the Worcester News with any details about the man's current condition in hospital.

Angela Tidmarsh, an organiser for Bikeaway Ventures, confirmed that the cyclist was taking part in the Blossom Trail Bikeaway.

“Our thoughts are with the cyclist. It’s the first time we have had a cardiac arrest on a bike ride,” she said.

“Blossom Bikeaway has been going for almost 20 years. It’s like a marathon, with things like that will hear that there have been incidents.

“It’s one of those very unfortunate incidents and thankfully they don’t happen often.”

She also commended the cyclists who helped provide emergency first aid to the man after seeing him collapse.

Some 200 cyclists took part in the Blossom Trail Bikeaway, which is one of the two annual rides organised by Bikeaway Ventures.

The events help to raise money for St John Ambulance and The Vale of Evesham Community First Responders.

The police confirmed that they attended the scene and conducted traffic.
