A MAN drove to France to deliver 100 sleeping bags to refugees who are sleeping rough after a camp fire.

People in Motion, a Worcestershire charity for refugees, bought the bags from shops across Worcestershire, on Tuesday, April 11.

Chris Russell, of Astwood Road, Worcester, who is a trustee for the charity, took the items from Malvern to Dunkirk that night.

People in Motion used emergency funds to buy the bags for those displaced by the Grande-Synthe refugee camp fire, on Monday, April 10.

Kirsty Fraser, co-founder of People in Motion, said: "We bought all the £15 sleeping bags.

"We went to different shops yesterday...we bought every item out of stock in our price range.

"Chris drove them there in a car last night with his wife. They left Malvern at about 10pm and got there at about 2am."

Ms Fraser said around 1,500 people were made homeless after the camp fire and that many are now sleeping rough.

"These [bags] are for the people sleeping rough," she added.

Mr Russell's daughter, Alice, followed in her father's footsteps and started cooking meals for refugees in Belgrade, Serbia, last year.

"My parents have always been involved in different things - they worked out in Ghana," she said.

"I have grown up with it...I always wanted to do something. They worked for Voluntary Service Overseas and have always volunteered."

People in Motion bought the sleeping bags from Worcestershire shops including Argos and Millets, in Worcester, and Mountain Warehouse, in Malvern.
