WORCESTERSHIRE'S premier clubs begin another season of Birmingham and District League action tomorrow (noon).

Kidderminster and Ombersley are among the clubs looking for success at the highest level in the Premier Division.

Ombersley's squad will be boosted by the regular availability of ex-Worcestershire all-rounder Gareth Andrew and County academy players Josh Dell and Nick Hammond.

They will call on Brett D’Oliveira subject to his County commitments and have again secured batsman Uday Kaul after a successful season in first-class Indian cricket.

The batting line-up will be spearheaded by Herefordshire opener Liam Gwynne who will be supported later in the season by England under 16s captain Jack Haynes.

Chairman Tim Oakley said: "The squad will again be under the astute guidance and captaincy of Arti Fiaz who has led the team over the last five years with great success.

"It is with great optimism the club look forward to a positive year."

Ombersley visit Kenilworth Wardens tomorrow with Kidderminster going to Walsall.

Malvern's Barnards Green are aiming to secure another top-five finish in Division One.

Green host promoted Tamworth tomorrow and Worcestershire’s George Rhodes could come up against his County team-mate Joe Clarke.

Josh Tongue has rejoined Green but the County bowler's expected lack of availability has created a chance for Shane Thompson.

Green are without stalwart Jon Dovey but welcome back Elliot Hennessy from Old Elizabethans and Ollie Swift from Worcester Nomads.

Division Two hopefuls Old Elizabethans, who visit Harborne tomorrow, have signed Eastnor's leg-spinning all-rounder Atiq-ur-Rehman from Pakistan as their overseas player.

Vice-captain and opening bowler Liam Booth has moved to Manchester but County academy player Matt Davis will lead the attack.

Richard Gardiner is available for the season and hit 79 in a 114-run friendly win over Nomads.

Cricket committee chairman Steve Walsh said: "We believe we have a competitive and more balanced squad than last season."

Jack Myers (Halesowen), Mahaaz Ahmed (Eastnor), Shameer Ahmed (Ombersley) and Khalid Baig (West Bromwich Dartmouth) are other signings with Jack Taylor going to Bromsgrove and Ash Bullock to Brockhampton.

Pershore will play at their highest level after promotion to Division Two and start at Wombourne tomorrow.

Skipper Chris Ridings said: “We are looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead and hope to have another successful season, enjoying our cricket with our locally-developed players.”

Pershore welcome Jon Hancock, Steve Miles and Chris Miles from Worcester Dominies.

Batsman Alex Clasen and Ieuan Davies have signed from Birlingham and Devon club Filleigh respectively.

Promoted Worcester Nomads, who host Nuneaton tomorrow, have another stab at Division Three and will hope to be more competitive this time with a young, talented squad.

Australian batsman and left-arm spinner Trevor Keen is their overseas player with the experienced Mark Groves, young Ben Whittenbury and Ewan Wilson also joining.

Cricket chairman Andy Leach said: "We're really looking forward to the challenge.

"After a great campaign last season we feel we are ready to be competitive and maintain a solid position.

"We're looking to get a few wins under our belt early season, build confidence and go from there."
