WORCESTER'S Trevor Willis made the best possible start to the British Hill Climb Championship season with a pair of run-off wins at Prescott.

Reigning six-time champion Scott Moran was the second highest scorer but may slip down the points table later on since he will only be doing half of this season’s events.

Surprise package Dave Uren was third best in his first championship event aboard an unlimited-class car.

In his 3.2 OMS-RPE 28 Willis drove 37.01 seconds and 36.86 for victory in the two rounds.

He leads with 20 points ahead of Moran on 17, Uren on 16, Richard Spedding on 12 and Eynon Price on 10.

Willis said: “It has been a fraught day with several niggles on the car but it has all worked out well in the end and I am delighted to get off to such a great start and at such a beautiful and testing venue.

“Fellow contenders, with Dave now driving the Gould and going so well straight out of the blocks, Wallace Menzies with his striking new Gould and Will Hall finally getting to grips with his Force, has the potential to make this season a closely-fought classic.”

Perfect weather, ideal track conditions and huge crowds created a successful start to the hill climb season in the two-day opener near Cheltenham.

The Midland Championship saw class wins for Simon Davies in a Caterham, Dave West in a Peugeot 106 GTi, Steve Darley in a Subaru Impreza, Eric Morrey in a Hillman Imp, Sarah Bosworth in a Lotus Elise and reigning champion Mike Turpin.

The British championship class 2015 champion Alex Summers, of Tenbury, introduced his new DJ Firestorm fitted with a TME KF V6 engine.
