A POSTMISTRESS has fulfilled her vow to reopen the post office two weeks after a smash-and-grab ram raid.

Barnards Green Post Office, in Court Road, Malvern, was back in business on Thursday, April 27.

Criminals used a mechanical digger to break through the front of the post office and steal the shop’s cash machine, on Thursday, April 13.

Postmistress Jenny Cain said she was overwhelmed by the level of support she had received in the aftermath of the incident.

“Yesterday we opened and I had a few tears. People have started coming back,” she said.

“Everyone is pleased we are open. The usual line is thank goodness for you being open again.

“We have a sense of community back again. It’s been one of those really lovely couple of days.

“I have had so many lunches, flowers, cards, a fruit basket and a bottle of Prosecco.

“Every greeting card has been dusted, every surface wiped, I’ve been speaking to builders and loss adjusters.

“Also a tonne and a half of rubble was taken away from the shop front, and I had a door put in.”

Ms Cain called the thieves ‘absolute scum’ after the raid, which happened at around 3.20am.

She thanked her four members of staff, who work part-time, for being brilliant throughout the rebuilding process.

An artificial wall has been installed behind the boarded up shop front, which was destroyed by a JCB digger.

“The wall could be up until the end of June when we get a new shop front,” Ms Cain said.

“The shop is starting to get the nickname ‘the cave’ because it’s enclosed. I can’t wait to get the windows back as it’s dark in there. There’s no windows at all.”

The thieves used a 4x4 and a piece of rope to rip out the ATM, which was later found at Blackmore Industrial Park, in Malvern.

They also used a black Mitsubishi L200, a silver Ford Ranger pickup and a blue Audi estate.

A police spokesman said that it does not appear any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
