A “WONDERFUL mum” celebrated her hundredth birthday at a party with family and friends.

Vera Lloyd, who lives at Mowbray Care Home, in Victoria Road, Malvern, was treated to a party to mark her milestone birthday on Wednesday, May 3.

And, of course, she received a birthday card from the Queen.

Her only daughter Rosalind Sutton, from Evesham, was at the party.

“She is brilliant,” said the 77-year-old.

“She doesn’t drink, she never smoked – I think she has just got good genes.”

The centenarian was born in North Piddle, near Worcester, in 1917 and grew up in the village, marrying her husband Ben there in 1938.

Their daughter was born the year after, in 1939.

Mr Lloyd was a farm worker and the family moved around the region, living in villages including Ombersley, Shipston-on-Stour and Pensham.

During World War Two, Mrs Lloyd took in Land Girls while her husband was a member of the Home Guard.

She undertook various farm work herself, such as fruit picking, and was also employed at Willmotts Spectacle Factory in Evesham.

In her later years, Mrs Lloyd enjoyed travelling, in particular cruises, and has flown to America– where her grandson lives –twice.

She has three grandsons, Mark, Nicholas and James, and three great grandchildren.
