A FOUR-year-old girl bought over £1,000 worth of toys and handed them out to babies in a children's hospital.

Paige Ledington, of Elgar Avenue, Malvern, raised £1,049 through a 2.2-mile sponsored bike ride on Thursday, April 20.

She used the money to buy toys for the babies at Birmingham Children's Hospital, after hearing that they had a shortage.

Paige filled up four trolleys with toys and delivered them to the hospital on Wednesday, April 26.

Her mum Charlie Ledington said: "There were just so many toys they couldn't fit them all in the ward for children younger than two-years-old.

"The playroom only had about 10 toys and that was it. People were so excited to have proper things to play with.

"Even the doctors came and said thank you to Paige and parents were coming to see what they got.

"We went up in the morning at about 10am and spent four hours in Toys R Us in Solihull.

"She was running up and down saying 'let's get this and this'. She loved it.

"Paige chose a little teddy for each individual baby. Then the rest went to those over two-years-old."

Ms Ledington, aged 27, said her daughter bought Duplo Lego, Disney princesses and a range of other toys to encourage the babies to sit up.

Paige gave a Beauty and the Beast toy to one girl who had been in the hospital for six months.

The girl started to smile for the first time in her stay when she received the toy, Ms Ledington said.

Rachel Grey, Paige's Auntie who works at the hospital, was delighted with how many toys her niece had bought.

"I never thought we would get £1,000. I thought we would struggle to get £250," Ms Ledington said.

The mother-of-four added that people also donated blankets and toys, which she took to the hospital.

The manager at Toys R Us gave Paige a ten per cent discount on the gifts she bought.
