A YOUNG man lost an arm in an accident at a railway station.

He apparently fell between a train and the platform at Droitwich Spa Railway Station on Friday night.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, raced to the station to rescue him from the track, while people on a train and the station looked on in shock.

Abbie Smith posted on the Worcester News Facebook page: “Drove past it about 20 minutes or so ago. There was an air ambulance trying to land. It was really low.

“There were several police cars and ambulances. I saw an unmarked police car zoom past, then travelled a bit further and another 4x4 ambulance truck came past.

“Never seen so many flashing lights. Made me have goosebumps.”

Katie Ryback also posted: “Scary to see. Lots of kids coming out of their Friday night youth club. Police and ambulance cars came from no where. MERIT ambulance incident support too.”

The accident happened at around 7.44pm, causing delays on trains through Droitwich Spa until around 10.30pm, with several services cancelled.

There were no trains running between Kidderminster and Worcester Shrub Hill, or between Bromsgrove and Worcester Shrub Hill with replacement buses operating instead.

A London Midland spokesman said: “The 18.48 Hereford to Birmingham New Street train was delayed by an incident in which a youth slipped between the train and the platform edge, and an air ambulance was called.”

The spokesman also confirmed that the youth had lost his arm.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: “At 7.43pm on Friday 12th May police were called to concerns of safety on the railway line by Droitwich Spa train station. The incident is being dealt with by British Transport Police.”

London Midland said that they will conduct a full investigation.
