A MAN has died after being involved in a crash on the A4440 to the east of Worcester.
It is thought the driver suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel, causing the car to crash into a lorry on the road.
The collision was witnessed by the crew of a passing ambulance, who immediately stopped and began emergency treatment.
As the paramedics worked, the road was closed between its junction near County Hall and the A422/A4538 roundabout at Spetchley, and motorists were diverted.
The incident happened at about 11.48am on Tuesday, close to the A44 junction.
Two ambulances and a paramedic officer were deployed to the scene, and the patient taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in a critical condition.
However, the driver, a man in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The man's next of kin and the coroner have both been informed.
Now police are seeking witnesses to the incident, which happened when the car, a red Ford, was driving along the A4440 by the junction of Swinesherd Way when it collided with a Mercedes lorry coming in the opposite direction from Spetchley. The lorry driver was uninjured.
Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw the incident or who saw the vehicle and the manner in which it was being driven prior to the collision.
Anyone with information is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting incident number 265S of May 16.
