A GROUP of travellers are still at a busy Worcester car park - despite it being over a MONTH since they arrived.

A set of eight caravans parked up at Croft Road car park almost five weeks ago, just a stone's throw from Worcester's Riverside Cafe.

But three of them are still there today, with questions being asked about why they have all not been moved on.

Colin Beech, 41, who lives off Pierpoint Street, Worcester, said: "I walk past the area every day and am sick of seeing them there, why have they been allowed to stay there?"

"It must be costing the council an arm and a leg in terms of money, people won't want to park there, will they.

"If that was a member of the public they'd have been ticketed every day."

Worcester City Council says it has not taken action because of some private "welfare concerns" around one of the travellers based on the site.

The group have already been visited by council workers, with the expectation that they will move on as soon as the matter is resolved.

A council spokesman said: "There is a welfare issue affecting a member of the group of travellers in Croft Road car park, so we will not be taking any action to move them on until that issue is resolved.

"Our officers are making regular checks on the travellers and we expect them to be leaving the car park very soon."

The council has not started any court proceedings to get them evicted from the land, with the group expected to move on without the need to take any formal action.

The site is opposite The Hive.

It is not the first time the car park, near the centre of Worcester, has been targeted by travellers.

In June last year a series of caravans set up camp on the same site after being moved on from Pitchcroft car park by the city council's legal department.
