GOAL shooter Eleanor Cardwell says Severn Stars are “desperate” for victory when they take on Hertfordshire Mavericks in their final home game of the season tomorrow night (7.30pm) after coming agonisingly close in their first encounter.

Stars succumbed to a 48-45 defeat at Hertfordshire Sports Village in the eighth round of the Vitality Netball Superleague last month, having led with just 90 seconds to go.

But Cardwell believes her side can reverse their fortunes and come out on top at the University of Worcester Arena.

“We’re desperate to get the win,” said in-form Cardwell who is the fourth highest scorer in the division.

“We lost by such a small margin last time but know we can turn it around and we really want it to go our way this time.

“It’s going to be a really competitive game. We’ve been working hard this week in training and hopefully we can come out with a win.”

The two sides head into the fixture level on points with Mavericks one place ahead in seventh due to a superior goal difference so a home win would see Stars climb above them in the league table.

Cardwell is keen for Stars to end the season on a high to give them a boost heading into the next campaign.

“We’ve only got two games left now so we just need to carry that high level of performance through to the end of the season to give us a platform for next season,” she added.

“We’re a completely new team. There’s only a few of us who have played together before in previous seasons.

"This season was just about building and trying to create those partnerships which I think we have done.

“There’s still a lot more work to do to try to get the best out of us all but we’re definitely moving in a positive direction.”
