WORCESTER fencer Abigail Watkins has risen to ninth in the Great Britain senior women's epée rankings.

The Royal Grammar School Worcester pupil, 15, was sixth in the British Youth Championship for under 16s and 18th at the FIE European Satellite Cole Cup in Sheffield.

The cup produced a gold medal for ex-RGS student Danielle Lawson who is ranked second British fencer.

Watkins, who trains at Malvern Hills Sword Fencing Club, finished 30th at the Birmingham International Open and 43rd at the British Senior National Championships despite feeling unwell at both events.

Watkins, who represents Wales, is ranked sixth British under 20 junior.

The cup event gave the teenager her first world ranking.
