PUB regulars who clubbed together to buy a horse were delighted to see it claim its first racing win.

Mark Daniels, the landlord of the Brewers Arms, in Comer Road, Worcester, celebrated the win by cracking open the champagne.

Mr Daniels and 14 of his punters achieved a lifelong ambition when they bought Destiny’s Gold in December.

The horse beat six other competitors at Uttoxeter Racecourse on Sunday, May 28, winning about £3,800 in prize money.

Landlord Mark Daniels, aged 46, took a coach to the event with seven other co-owners from the pub.

He said: "We went into the owners' gallery box right by the finish post and watched the race from there.

"It was a bit of a shock to win. It was like a smack in the gob, we were walking around stunned.

"The first thing I did was ring my barmaid and told her to get the champagne on ice. We continued the party when we got back.

"It was on the Sky racing channel and about 60 people were in the pub cheering on the horse. They had put bets on.

"I came back with four bottles of champagne in my arm and that did the tour around the pub."

Mr Daniels said he has no doubt that the horse will race in Worcester before the summer racing season ends.

The horse was second favourite to win in Uttoxeter with odds of seven-to-two.

The 2.3-furlong hurdle event was the third race Destiny's Gold has been involved in as part of the Brewers Arms Racing Club.

Ten percent of the prize money will go to the trainer, who is based in Claines, another ten percent will go to the jockey, and five percent will be handed to the stable staff.

The remaining pool of money will pay for training, transport, jockey and race entry fees.

The group also received two crystal glasses and a bottle of champagne after the win.

Wye Valley brewery has made a special pump clip in honour of the racehorse, which will be displayed in the Brewers Arms.
