TRAVELLERS who moved onto a playing field have been served with a notice to leave the site.

Worcester City Council visited the site today (June 6) and gave the travellers a notice to leave immediately.

Police also issued a community protection notice today after receiving reports of minor anti-social behaviour at the site.

There have been reports of motoring issues, people urinating in hedges and another incident, which is currently under investigation.

The travellers reportedly arrived on Sunday and there are currently 16 caravans parked at the site in King George V Playing Fields, Worcester.

One of the travellers said he arrived yesterday and is travelling to the Appleby Horse Fair with the rest of the group.

Thomas McDonagh said: “We are from Ireland. People have been very nice and polite and we will leave the place how we found it.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience. We are going tomorrow evening.”

It did not appear that there was any rubbish at the site apart from some bin bags, which were next to the caravans.

A police officer at the scene said they accompanied council staff when they served the travellers with a 48-hour notice.

He added that the community protection notice was like a ‘warning letter’ outlining acceptable behaviour on the site.

A Worcester City Council spokesman said: “Council officers have visited the travellers at KGV playing fields and carried out a welfare check.

“If the travellers are still in place on Wednesday we will issue possession proceedings at the County Court, giving them 48 hours’ notice before a court hearing seeking a possession order that can be enforced by court bailiffs.

“The travellers have told our officers that they intend to leave on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning.

“We are liaising closely with the police.”

The council served the travellers with a notice to leave under Civil Procedure Rule 55.
