A GROUP of activists have put up dozens of posters around Malvern mocking the Conservative’s General Election slogan.

As voters went to the polls yesterday they would have seen

The group stuck about 100 stickers and 40 ‘strong and stable my arse’ posters on surfaces across Malvern mocking the "strong and stable leadership" slogan used by Theresa May.

An activist involved in the campaign, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "The idea of the campaign comes from Jeremy Deller, the Turner Prize winning artist who kicked off the national ‘strong and stable my arse’ idea.

"I thought this was suitably humorous and also liked the idea of a bit of London art in the provinces.

"There were about 40 posters and 100 stickers all over the town. It sounds like many are still in place, which is satisfying."

The activist, who claimed to be a former Tory voter, said the posters were put up by a small group of friends.

He added the campaign is intended to highlight the hypocrisy of the Conservative's 'strong and stable' slogan.

He said: "The cuts in police numbers, particularly armed police, are a fine example.

"Stability is not the word I would use to describe Boris Johnson, Liam Fox or David Davis."

He also called the Conservative's West Worcestershire parliamentary candidate Harriett Baldwin a 'cardboard cut-out' of Theresa May.

"She has no visible ideas of her own and just repeats the phrases provided by Conservative central office," he said.

Michael Hodges, chairman of the West Worcestershire Conservative Association, said: “At each election, Conservative campaign posters are vandalised and defaced and sometimes people have trespassed on private land to carry out this destruction.

"Some extremely offensive language was painted on one of our signs this week, along with a sticker.

"I would expect that the Gazette/News will be passing the details of these people to the police.

"However, I am also pleased that our ‘strong and stable’ message has been absorbed by the general public."
