RESIDENTS have been evacuated from a road in Kidderminster after police and West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit arrived at the home of their neighbour.

West Mercia Police said they were assisting the Counter Terrorism Unit and put an 100m cordon in place in Merton Close.

Residents said they believed a suspicious package was being investigated.

People living in Merton Close were told to leave their homes at around 6pm this evening.

A bomb disposal team from the Royal Logistics Corps then arrived in the road.

One eyewitness said there had been police activity at a home in the road since yesterday evening.

The man, who asked not to be named, said: "The residents are talking through Facebook.

"They said it was related to terror activities, that's what's being said. I don't know.

"I can understand the police being cautious with what's happening in London.

"This is a bit close to home. It's my road."

A video from resident Jay Macarelli was posted to Facebook.

They released a statement saying: "A 100m cordon put in place as a precautionary measure in the Merton Close area of Kidderminster this evening (19 June) has now been lifted.

"Officers from West Mercia Police assisted West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU).

"The cordon was in place for around two hours.

Armed anti-terrorist police arrested a man in possession of knives in Birmingham Road last night.

He was near a Territorial Army Centre, although police said earlier there was no suggestion of any threat to that place.
