VOLUNTEER tutor Simon Berry has won Worcester Community Trust’s maiden chess tournament.

The Chess in Schools and Communities tutor triumphed at King George V Community Hub in Brickfields, Worcester, after beating Scott Whitefoot in the final.

Twelve players took part in the event, organised by Todd Reeves and supported by Worcester War Games and Worcestershire Chess Association, who provided the equipment.

Players, from eight to 60 years old, warmed up with social games played to the sounds of Worcester musicians Polly and Kringo Blue.

Players were limited to six minutes for all their moves and split into two pools.

Berry and Whitefoot topped their respective pools after winning all their matches and scoring five points per victory.

Doug Nicholls finished runner-up to Berry in Pool A, while Simon Clayton was second to Whitefoot in Pool B.

The finalists had only a few minutes to recover before the knockout stage started.

Berry eventually prevailed to win the competition.

Sharon Amos provided the food and the event raised £45 for the trust.

Worcester Community Trust’s next big chess competition take place on Thursday, July 27.

A children’s event, for eight to 16 year olds, will begin at 5pm.

An adult tournament for casual players will run from 7.30pm to 10pm.
