TWO well-known Worcester landmarks have received a prestigious accolade from travel website TripAdvisor.

The historic Guildhall, in the High Street, and Gheluvelt Park, in Barbourne, have both received the site's coveted Certificate of Excellence.

To qualify for the award, venues must maintain an overall TripAdvisor rating of at least four out of five, have a minimum number of reviews and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months.

Cllr Lucy Hodgson, chairman of the place and economic development sub-committee, said: “The Guildhall is not only one of Worcester’s most beautiful buildings, but also offers visitors an insight in to Worcester's rich and varied history.

“We’re incredibly proud to have received this accolade.”

Dating back to 1721, Worcester’s Guildhall has a fascinating history – it was once the seat of justice for the city and even housed a prison.

For many years, the Court Room witnessed scenes of high drama. Prisoners, many of whom were sentenced to death, were led up to it through a trap door in the middle of the floor, and once sentenced, were taken down again to await their fate.

Over the years, the building has received its fair share of Royal patronage.

Queen Elizabeth II visited in 2001 and 2012, and King George III and Queen Charlotte visited in August 1788, with three of the princesses.

A portrait of the King still hangs in the Assembly Room to mark the occasion.

Gheluvelt Park opened in 1922 to commemorate the Worcestershire Regiment's 2nd Battalion after their part in Battle of Gheluvelt, in the First World War.

It is home to the city's popular splashpad,
