ON-SONG Shane Abel stunned fellow cricketers with the fifth best bowling figures in the Worcestershire Cricket League's history.

The Malvern seconds paceman took 9-11 against their Hanley Castle and Upton counterparts in Division Four which was just behind four 10-wicket hauls in the league records.

Abel singlehandedly lifted his side from the foot of the table above Worcester fourths as they bowled out their local rivals for just 33 runs.

Hosts Hanley had no answer to the tall opening bowler's pace, accuracy and aggression as he earned match figures of 8.4-5-11-9 at The Glebe.

Malvern batted first to score 154-9 from 45 overs with Michael McCollum scoring 42 before they romped to a 121-run win over their mid-table opponents.

Abel, who achieved the figures despite nursing a swollen cheek and injured shoulder, admitted: “I don’t know what to say. I never thought I’d do anything like that.”

His first over was wicketless and cost eight runs but after that the bowler took nine for just three runs from 7.4 overs with five maidens.

A mixture of lbw decisions, bowled, caught behind and one held by Ian Alley at mid-on attributed for the Hanley batsmen.

Hanley Castle captain Ian Hobbs, one of Abel’s victims, said to Malvern's players: “I have never seen anything like that.”

Team-mate Alley said: "Shane has bowled this well all season but this time every opportunity of a catch was caught and every lbw appeal given.

"Barry Addison, the other Malvern opening bowler, took the sixth wicket of the innings with Shane already having taken the first five.

"He felt so guilty at denying Shane all 10 wickets he felt compelled to buy a jug of beer for the team afterwards!"

Former Dyson Perrins Academy and University of Worcester student Abel earlier scored 15 batting at number four.

Malvern are planning to mount the match ball, which was kept by Abel, on a shield with a plaque on the wall of their Recency Road clubhouse to mark his achievement.
