OIL is polluting a stream in Malvern – with dog walkers being put on high alert.

The Environment Agency says oil pollution has been reported this afternoon (Wednesday) in a stream running alongside fields below Sling Lane, towards Harbinger Avenue, in Malvern.

It is urging dog owners to be alert to the issue after reports that some pets have already been affected by the oil.

It is currently not known where the oil is coming from and the Environment Agency says it will investigate as soon as possible.

Deborah Stanley, of Cotswold Road, Malvern, said: “I walked my dog in the field behind Greenhill Drive yesterday and my dog went into the stream and was covered in an oily substance.

“I rushed her home and tried to get her cleaned up, it took several showers to get her cleaned.

“I contacted the Environment Agency to let them know, I also contacted some friends and neighbours to make them aware.”

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “We have heard that dogs that have been in the stream and have been affected, and we urge owners to keep their dogs out of the stream.

“We will be investigating and hope to find out where the pollution is coming from.”

A member of the public, who did not want to give her name, also called up to warn about the pollution.

She said she had heard that a member of the public’s dog had been into the stream and got oil all over its coat
