THE mother of a nine-year-old schoolgirl who has been left partially paralysed after suffering a stroke has thanked the community for its support.

Evie Wu, a pupil at Badsey First School, near Evesham, was rushed to Worcestershire Royal after collapsing during a family outing at West Midlands Safari Park on Monday, June 19.

The stroke has caused paralysis down the right side of Evie's body and she is undergoing physiotherapy, occupational, speech and language therapy at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Following the devastating news, residents came together to raise cash to aid Evie's recovering and more than £2,000 has been raised so far.

Evie's mother Suzy said she is "truly grateful" and "overwhelmed" by people’s generosity.

She said the youngster was in "good spirits" despite being confined to a wheelchair.

"It's going to be a slow process," she said.

"Evie's speech is slowly improving but we still have a long way to go. She has been taken off pureed food and is allowed to eat normally.

"She has to wear a foot support and a hand support to stop her foot from drooping and to stop her hand from curling under."

"She still has no movement of her right limbs."

The cause of the stroke is currently unknown.

Family friend Neil Double, whose daughter Eloise Ferris is best friends with Evie, set up a Just Giving page and this currently stands at more than £1,500.

Village pub the Wheatsheaf Inn raised £100 through two collection buckets and these collections will be ongoing for all people unable to give via the Just Giving page.

Badsey First School have a planned dance-a-thon on Friday, July 7, and all children have been asked to come in non-school uniform and give a small donation to Evie's fund.

Badsey Youth Club have set up a charity bingo night at the village hall on Saturday, July 15 at 6pm. All money raised will go to Evie's fund. The event will also feature a raffle and hog roast. For more information email badseyyouthclub@gmail.com.

The company where Mr Double works, Blueearth Foods, are holding two-day cake sale this week and any amount raised will be matched and donated to the fund.
