A SPECIAL get-together has been held by people living in Worcester's Diglis area.

On Sunday the Friends of Diglis Fields held a community fun day on the fields.

The Picnic on the Fields is an annual event organised by local volunteers from the Friends of Diglis Fields, providing a chance to share food and meet new people.

This year was even more special as it celebrated the completion of improvements to the field recently carried out by Worcester City Council.

Hundreds of people enjoyed the food and conversation, plus a chance to win something on the tombola and other fun activities.

The bouncy castle, ice creams and face painting attracted lots of youngsters, and Worcester and District Model Engineers ran their ever-popular trains along with a static display of steam powered engines.

New for this year was a treasure hunt aimed at getting children to explore their local green space and get to know it a bit better.

The city council wardens helped organise the event, and offered free bike marking and members of Volunteeasy helped to set up the event.

The event was supported by the Worcester office of Harrison Clark Rickerbys, incorporating Gordon Lutton and Co, which sponsored the bouncy castle.

Jonathan Brew, the firm’s senior partner, said “I am very happy that my firm was able to contribute towards such an enjoyable day for everyone at the fun day – the fields are an excellent facility for the local community.”

Councillor Simon Geraghty also made a donation to the event running costs.

He said: “I’m delighted to be able to support the Diglis Community Fun Day with a contribution from the Divisional Fund.

"The event is a great opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy the much improved Diglis Playing Fields and meet other local residents.”

Coaches from the Albion Foundation provided free multi sports activities and many local businesses donated prizes.

Francis Lankester, chairman of the Friends of Diglis Fields, said: “All of this help contributed to a wonderful day and helped to keep this a free event.

"We hope to see even more people next year and would love to hear from anyone who might want to be involved in organising next year’s event”.

Friends of Diglis Fields was formed in September 2012 to help protect and improve Diglis Recreation Ground and the Cherry Orchard Local Nature Reserve.
