A HIGH school is asking parents and residents nearby what they think about it getting bigger.

Tudor Grange Academy Worcester has said it wants to increase the number of pupils from 180 per year to 210 in years 7 to 11.

The move means an extra 30 pupils will be added each year until, over time, the current 1,100 capacity of the school would be increased to 1,250.

The expansion would also mean building works would be required at the Bilford Road school, with details of how that would happen due to be revealed at a public meeting on Thursday, July 6.

The school published a statement indicating this is likely to be by making buildings already within the school bigger and has promised to ensure the building works disrupt current pupils as little as possible.

The statement also said the school did not intend to make any amendments to its current admissions policy.

Samantha Roach, the school's principal, said: "We will be growing our Pupil Admission Number (PAN) from 180 to 210 to meet the demographic and housing growth in Worcester.

"All city schools were approached by the local authority in 2015 and discussions took place about the need for additional places with all the secondary schools in Worcester and Pershore High, The Chantry High, Droitwich Spa High and Hanley Castle High, on an individual basis.

"TGAW is currently the smallest high school in Worcester city and the PAN of 210 brings us broadly in line with other high schools (some being much larger).

"We have been planning and building capacity to be able to accommodate an extra 30 students per year group."

The news is likely to be met with enthusiasm by some parents as Tudor Grange has risen in popularity as a school in the city and was over-subscribed by 180 pupils for its September intake.

We reported last year how four secondary schools in and around the city would expand to cater for a rise in the number of primary children needing places due to higher birth rates.

Nunnery Wood High School, Christopher Whitehead Language College, Tudor Grange Academy Worcester and The Chantry school in Martley were selected by the council on their ability and willingness to expand, location in relation to expected growth and were all rated as 'Good' or better by Ofsted.

The schools were also promised an injection of £2.25 million capital funding from the county's basic need grant which is provided by the Department for Education.

The meeting at Tudor Grange Academy Worcester will take place at 6pm on Thursday, July 6 in the Science Lead Lesson Suite.
