PRIMARY school pupils from across Worcestershire came together for a maths challenge.

The King's School Primary Schools' Maths Challenge is hosted annually at King's School Worcester and is designed to promote mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills.

Teams of year 5 pupils from 21 schools across Worcester, Malvern and Bromsgrove battled it out with their contemporaries to see who would be crowned the winners.

Among the schools in and around Worcester taking part were Broadheath Primary School, Cherry Orchard Primary School, Claines CE Primary School, Nunnery Wood Primary School, Perdiswell Primary School, Perry Wood Primary and Nursery School, Pitmaston Primary School, St Clement’s CE Primary School and Sytchampton Primary School.

The Fairfield Community Primary School, Cranham Primary School, Hollymount School, Northwick Manor Primary School, Stanley Road Primary School, St George’s Catholic Primary School, Whittington CE Primary School, Lyppard Grange Primary School, St Barnabas CE Primary School and St George’s CE Primary School also all took part.

From further afield were Northleigh CE Primary School, Malvern, and Catshill Middle School, near Bromsgrove.

The event consisted of four rounds of maths-based questions, including a mix of problem solving, arithmetic and logic.

In the first three rounds, children worked in teams of four and then the final round culminated in a mathematical relay against the clock.

The winners were Claines CE Primary School, who took home the winner's shield.

St Clement’s CE Primary School and St George’s Catholic Primary School came joint second in a very close challenge.

Simon Gent, headteacher at Claines CE Primary School, said: "It’s a fantastic initiative and we are very proud indeed of our winning team."

It is the sixth year that King's has hosted the quiz.

Oliver Heydon, the school's head of mathematics, said “We have been delighted at the enthusiasm, application and evident enjoyment throughout the challenge.

"The day certainly challenged the children and showed them that maths can be fun in a collaborative way.

"We will certainly be doing the challenge again as it has, once again, been a great success and we look forward to welcoming even more schools next year."

The challenge took place on Tuesday, July 4.
