CONCERNED residents, parents and campaigners are calling on the county council to install a pedestrian crossing after a 13-year-old boy was hit by a car.

The crash took place at the Charles Hastings Way roundabout in Worcester on Wednesday afternoon at 3.20pm and involved the boy who was riding a bike, and a gold Mercedes car.

Following the crash, the teenager was treated for leg pain and taken to the nearby Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Currently, the nearest crossing is on Newtown Road.

Posting on the Worcester News Facebook page, Jen Boraston said: "I cross that section every day and why there isn't a crossing is beyond me. Cars don't stop, it's so busy and if you're walking away from the hospital, you can't see anything coming up to the slip road for it.

"It's often a complete leap of faith and all the school kids use it. Get a crossing put in please."

Deb Ratcliff said: "Something needs to be done there.

"Children risk their lives crossing there to get to school. It's such a busy roundabout and I'm surprised an accident hasn't happened sooner."

Mike Parkin said: "Why there isn't a proper crossing on the A4440 side of the roundabout is beyond my comprehension."

Jon Fraser, head of highways at Worcestershire County Council, said he is not aware of any request for a crossing.

He said: "If we do receive a request, we will investigate it."

He added: "Obviously we put them in where they are more required. We would have to carry out an assessment and get evidence as to how needed it is."

Ward member for Warndon, Cllr Andy Roberts, cabinet member with responsibility for children and families, was unavailable for comment.
