A BURST water pipe caused a road to be flooded.

Police have closed Barbourne Lane, which runs alongside Gheluvelt Park, after a 14 inch pipe burst.

No homes were flooded and water outages were just 'intermittent' although some residents said that their water pressures had decreased.

The road has been coned off to drivers and a cordon has been placed around where the pipe burst.

The play park at Gheluvelt Park was also closed on Wednesday but is due to re-open later today.

Simon Rothery, distribution manager for Severn Trent who are repairing the damage said: "The most important thing is to repair the pipe as quickly as we can and the good news is that no homes have been flooded.

"This is a routine incident for us, although it tends to be the smaller pipes which burst rather than the bigger ones.

"We are jetwashing the park as silt has made its way onto the play area but there is no risk to the public.

"The park is closed whilst we wait for that (the jetwashing) as the silt makes it aesthetically grubby and once you have children on the park it is hard to get them off to do the work.

"We cannot turn off the supply as quickly as some members of the public want us to as it would leave about 2,000 homes in Worcester without power which would be unacceptable.

"It was particularly bad as the pipe cracked in the lowest part of the road, so the water has nowhere to go. We will have to resurface the road."

"Water supplies only went off intermittently although some people may be experiencing low water pressures."

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said that the road could be closed for a fortnight but Mr Rothery hoped that the road would be fully functional within a week.

Police and fire services were called at around 6.35pm on Tuesday before leaving management in the hands of Severn Trent.

A resident of the road, who did not wish to be named said that she waited on the corner of the road for three hours whilst waiting for the go ahead to enter her home.

"I was a bit annoyed, I didn't want to take the kids into our house until I knew it was safe.

"We waited for a few hours and the water was probably up to the level of our doorstep but no water got into the house.

"The workers have been very helpful though."

Another resident who did not wish to be named added: "It was quite incredible, the level of water on the road. It has not affected us really though as we were in the house at the time."

Other residents reported that the burst pipe had not affected them badly and that they had managed to get their cars out of the road.
