A FAMILY-RUN care home near Worcester has been hailed 'outstanding' following a recent inspection.

The Mill House Care Home in Kington, Flyford Flavell, was visited by Care Quality Commission (CQC) examiners on January 10 and 11 this year.

A report published on April 19, judged the service to be 'outstanding' overall- the highest possible rating.

The care home, which had 31 occupants at the time of inspection, was found 'outstanding' in two areas; leadership and responsiveness and was judged 'good' for its effectiveness, safety and caring.

The report said: "People had developed strong relationships and bonds with staff, who supported people with compassion and respect.

"There was clear and open communication between the provider, manager and staff, so staff knew what was expected of them.

"The provider, manager and senior staff based their approach to care on nationally recognised best practice.

"People's right to make decisions and their freedom was protected.

"People's need for independence and to maintain their preferred lifestyles were taken into account by staff when they cared for them."

The care home is owned by Joanne and Tony Carroll since 1994, and run by daughter Georgina Stone.

Mrs Carroll said: "Being recognised as 'outstanding' is a fitting tribute to the hard work and enthusiasm of the staff. Several senior members of staff have worked with me for over 20 years, sharing values and aspirations. My previous manager is now an independent trainer, running our sister organisation, Mill House Training, and she ensures we can always be ready to respond to the ever changing needs of the people that we support."

Miss Stone added: "We are not thinking that it is job done; it is about always trying to develop and continuing to move forward so we can provide the best service we can into the future."

The inspector said Miss Stone had plans to improve the home, with more development of the sensory area and plans for a sweet shop.

The home was also planning to build further community links, for the benefit of people living at the home.

In addition, one person living at the home had expressed a wish to be involved in the recruitment of staff, and plans had been put in place for this to be undertaken.
