IF you've ever wondered how to track and destroy enemy submarines, landlocked Worcester's a good place to be.

Enigma, Bletchley Park and Battle of the Atlantic expert Dr Mark Baldwin will deliver his latest illustrated presentation at Worcester’s Huntingdon Hall as part of this year’s Worcester Festival.

A spokesman said: "Dr Baldwin has lectured all over Britain, Germany and Poland. He is regarded as one of the most experienced speakers on WW2 intelligence, having delivered over 700 presentations on this and related subjects, and is the only person to have been asked to speak on the codebreakers at London’s Special Forces Club and on special operations at Bletchley Park, home of the codebreakers.

"He has been handling Enigma machines longer than anyone in Germany’s armed forces and supplied the 4-rotor Enigma machine for use in the 2014 film The Imitation Game. His extensive knowledge about the subject prompted him to write a book about the Enigma ma-chine, entitled Code Breakers."

The spokesman added: "Now, in this latest fascinating talk, he will explore the story of the Enigma ciphers, which the Germans believed unbreakable. Nevertheless, the Bletchley Park codebreakers unravelled Enigma, and thus read several million German messages, providing reliable intelligence.

"To exemplify the importance of codebreaking in winning the war, Dr Baldwin analyses the Battle of the Atlantic, a fierce conflict lasting nearly six years and costing over 60,000 lives. The evening ends with a demonstration of one of the few surviving Enigma machines, allowing members of the audience hands-on operation of this iconic device."

The event will take place at Huntingdon Hall on Friday, August 25, from 7.30pm.
