EVESHAM welcomed ladies from many surrounding clubs to play in their Open Am-Am.

The 24 early starters had to tackle the expected heavy rain but it cleared by late morning so the 44 in the afternoon enjoyed sunny conditions with more wind.

Teams had entered from clubs including Puckrup Hall, Ravenmeadow, The Worcestershire, Leominster and Broadway.

The format was stableford with the best two scores to count playing off 90 per cent of handicap.

Some good scores came in with the guests from Broadway winning for the second year in a row.

Louise Folkes, Irene Hawkes, Barbara Buggins and Jan Titley triumphed with 85 points.

Second were Evesham's Eunice Allen, Marlene Billings and Penny Osborne alongside Elaine Boscott from Stratford Oaks with 81.

Glynne Hall, Gill Boase, Lesley Turbot and Carol Gardner from Leominster finished third on 80.

Titley was also nearest the pin and Lilley Brook's B Eaton hit the longest drive.

The best front nine was 39 by E Hill, L Poole (both The Worcestershire), J Masser and V Kite (both Evesham).

D Wood (Evesham), J Millard (The Vale), F Joseph and N Littler (both Edgbaston) had the best back nine of 39.

On a hot and muggy day 39 Evesham ladies who qualified from medals the previous year battled the conditions to compete in two prestigious competitions.

Winning the Lisa Lightfoot Salver with a gross score of 88 was Melanie Evans ahead of Marlene Billings on 90.

The Rose Bowl went to Billings with 68 nett followed by Evans on 70.

A medal was also played for by the ladies who did not qualify.

Sally Deakin topped Division Two with 75 nett from Shelagh Crane on 76.

Sue Taylor won Division Three with 70 ahead of Penny Osborne on 76.
