WORK continues on Worcester's £20m Cathedral Square development, which is set to officially open this weekend.

A grand opening event, corresponding with Three Choirs Festival, is being held on Saturday and will include a variety of entertainment.

There will be a visit from celebrity chef Lesley Waters of 'Ready Steady Cook', live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, children's workshops and even a Harry Potter film on a large screen placed opposite the new square.

All Bar One will be offering cocktail masterclasses and the gym due to open called Fitness4less will have class demonstrations, organisers have confirmed.

Despite this weekend's official opening, the site is being opened in stages and the whole site expected to be completely finished by Christmas.

Worcestershire County Council, which is constructing the open piazza element of the scheme, will be postponing work on College Street while the event is held.

Jon Fraser, head of highways at Worcestershire County Council, said: "Little bits and pieces extra will need to be done but substantially it is going to be all open for the big launch on Saturday.

"The square will be open for sure and the bus stop will reopen but work will pause on College Street during the event."

Six restaurants in total will be open for business during the festivities.

Some 339 tonnes of steel have been used, 415 retail jobs will be created once it is open.

Names coming to the site include All Bar One, Starbucks, Ask, Miller & Carter, Byron Hamburgers, Cosy Club, Yo! Sushi, Jung Fu, Fitness4Less and Wilko.
