A WELL-KNOWN Worcester tribute singer opened a new charity shop in Ronkswood on Saturday.

Tony James, known as Blobbie Williams, cut the tape on the New Hope 50p charity shop in Lichfield Avenue, during a grand-opening ceremony.

Crowds eagerly gathered outside the shop, where the sun was shining, to catch a first glimpse and grab some bargains.

It is the second New Hope shop to open in Worcester after the first store in Tolladine, which celebrated its one year anniversary in May.

Everything in the shop, which supports disabled children and their families, costs 50p with all money going towards the charity’s work.

Speaking at the opening, Blobbie said: “It is a pleasure to be involved and to be thought of.

“The charity is wonderful – any time they ask me to help, as long as I’m not working, I will be there to support.”

New Hope charity founder and shop manager Jean Wilson, who has an MBE for her services to children, said: “It is great. We have worked very hard to get this shop open.

“We are in the heart of the city now. We have got two shops in Worcester now so it’s very exciting.”

She added that the charity is always on the lookout for volunteers, and anyone who can helped should visit the website.

Money raised at the shop will help fund the activities carried out by the charity, which has a day centre located nearby in Wells Road.

Charlotte Pickett, aged 23, one of the first shoppers to visit the store, said: “I think it is brilliant.

“It is bringing something into the community that can really help. The one in Tolladine has already done amazing things.”

Blobbie, who has appeared on Channel 4 shows Come Dine With Me and Deal or no Deal, was part of Take Fat, a performance group which uses Take That’s music and comedy.
