TRAVELLERS have moved into a supermarket car park in the city.

Two caravans were in the Tesco car park in Mill Wood Drive, Warndon Villages, Worcester, today.

The group said they arrived last night, when there were also two other caravans at the site.

One of the travellers said they intend to leave soon and claimed bailiffs threatened to evict them this afternoon.

Martin McDonald, who arrived at the site last night, said: "We're going tomorrow, this is a scheduled stop.

"One of our lads got arrested and is not being released until tomorrow."

Mr McDonald said they have had some problems with locals and called on the council to provide travellers with transit sites.

"It's nice for people to say 'you can go here'... with facilities. We won't be complaining and locals won't be complaining," he said.

"Obviously there are some upset locals looking for a place to park saying 'you shouldn't be here'. They are probably right."

Mr McDonald described his family as a 'class act' and said they were putting their rubbish in black bags.

"In all communities there's good and bad. We try and put them [rubbish] into black bags and leave them on the sites," he added.

Another traveller in the car park said they were working locally and would be in the area for two or three weeks.

The 18-year-old claimed he had come from Southampton and was on his way to Scotland.

"We got here last night and are leaving today. We had the bailiffs come down about an hour ago," he said.

"They are going to evict us tomorrow morning."

The traveller also said he had his rubbish in black sacks and will take it to the skip when he leaves.

He added that a lot of shoppers have been staring at them since they moved into the car park.

Cllr Lucy Hodgson, who represents Warndon Parish South on the city council, said the travellers were the landlord's responsibility.

"There's not really much we can do as it's private land," she added.

Ms Hodgson, who is also cabinet member for communities on Worcestershire County Council, said: "It's one where nobody really wants them on their doorsteps. It's a difficult one."

The councillor added that in an ideal world transit sites are a good idea but the problem is finding the land.

A spokesman for Tesco said: "We are aware of this issue and are working with our security providers to have the vehicles removed, as they do not have permission to be there."
