WORCESTER Show was hailed as the biggest and best yet as organisers said it was set to break last year’s record of 10,000 visitors.

The show at Gheluvelt Park today (Sunday) continues to grow in size and popularity with the addition of a dog show this year.

Visitors were spoiled for choice with a chance to watch drills by the air cadets (187 Squadron), Worcester City Football Club penalty shootout competitions and tug of war.

Among those to take part in the tug of war were Stuart Worrall and son Hayden, 11, of St John's, Worcester, who helped their team to a 2-1 win in a best of three competition.

The fun dog show was a welcome new addition which included 10 classes such as junior handler, prettiest bitch and waggiest tail. There was also a best in show category and a chance to take part in agility.

Ellie Stokes, 11, of Warndon Villages, Worcester, came third in the junior handler class and fifth in handsomest dog with Max, a bichon frise, a Jack Russell and a Shih Tzu cross.

Got 2 Sing gave a lively performance before the mayor of Worcester, Cllr Steve Mackay, officially opened the floral marquee for the 12th Worcester Show. There were 750 entries. The show was judged by Bill Simpson who has also judged at various shows including RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court and Andy Allen who retired from his job 12 years ago to train as a garden designer.

Mr Simpson said the standard of entries had been very good. He added: "We're trying to promote allotments, horticulture and an interest in gardening, building up the show. We have seen it grow over the years. I would like to see more entries next year."

The best in show was won by Brian Sampson who was awarded the most points overall by the judges.
