ANOTHER area of Worcester has been highlighted as a place where drug-taking is said to be an ongoing problem.

Last week the paper highlighted the shocking case of how McDonald's diners watched a young woman apparently overdose on drugs in Angel Street, before she was taken to hospital.

And concerned readers, who fear drug problems are increasing in the city, have spoken to the paper about another area where drug taking has been happening.

One reader messaged us on Facebook saying: "Crack den under City Walls bridge going over to St Martin's Gate car park.

"Walking over their with my kids - dirty needles plus belongings.

"Any child could get their self hurt if they were to walk down those steps."

Our photographer visited the area on Monday morning, and found used syringes near to where people were sleeping rough under the pedestrian bridge.

Shockingly, the syringes were left on steps which people used to gain access to and to leave the bridge that runs between City Walls Road and New Street.

A spokesman for Worcester City Council said the authority's refuse team had been informed of this and had a statutory responsibility to remove all drug-related paraphernalia within 24 hours, which they will be doing.

Police insist they are tackling drug crime, highlighting that drug-related offences have in fact fallen with 647 recorded in the city centre last year - a drop of 666 on the previous year.

Superintendent Kevin Purcell said: "We will continue to tackle reports of drug use through robust enforcement that targets drug supply, drug-related crime and anti-social behaviour."

To report drug-related activity call West Mercia Police on 101, or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
