WORK will begin to fix a city centre road tomorrow after a sinkhole opened up.

New Street is currently closed to traffic after the 10cm wide hole outside Beautiful Flowers appeared due to a sewer collapse.

It is forecast that the road will be closed for about a week, although it is still open to pedestrians.

A Severn Trent spokesman said: "We’re setting up site and will start digging tomorrow, we’re expecting the road to remain closed for around a week still."

Ashley Norton, civil site engineer for Severn Trent said: "We've had no option but to close the street as a safety precaution and it looks as though it's going to have stay closed for the week."

"We don't know how wide the collapse is yet but the sewer is 3.5m deep and we cannot allow a car to go down the road because it may open it up further.

"We've closed it off for now and we can start digging tomorrow morning so we can see how bad it is."

The sinkhole was reported at around 2.15pm on Monday.
