WORCESTER City Council has pledged to review litter and dog bin emptying schedules after a Worcester News reader snapped an overflowing dog bin during Bank Holiday weekend.

Graham Shewell sent us the image of the bin on Bank Holiday Monday, that is next to a path in Merrimans Hill, which showed it was so full the bin lid was open, with bags on the floor.

Mr Shewell said: “I am constantly hearing complaints that people do not pick up their dog’s poo along the canal.

“Someone regularly sprays the poo red to highlight it.

“But I walked my dog up the Worcester canal and the poo bin was overflowing.

“I felt sorry for anyone who had to walk past as the smell was not pleasant.”

Last year Worcester News reported on the launch of the Poo Watch app, a joint initiative between Safer Worcester Partnership, the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust (DWT) and Worcester City Council with funding from West Mercia’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

It was committed to stopping people not picking up dog poo, with stickers and posters put up in affected areas.

A city council spokesman said: “There are a reduced number of city council staff working on bank holidays, so we apologise we were not able to empty this bin sooner.

"It was emptied first thing on Tuesday morning.

"We will soon be reviewing our litter and dog bin emptying schedules to take more account of when bins are being used more.

“If residents do spot a bin that is full we would encourage them to let us know as soon as possible at worcester.gov.uk/report-it.”
