CCTV footage could emerge of the moment when a vehicle delivering goods to a business in Cathedral Square allegedly drove over and damaged the plinth belonging to the statue of renowned Worcester composer Edward Elgar.

This was the second time in less than a week that damage was discovered on the new plinth, which was only installed in July, as part of the Cathedral Square development.

Initially, a Worcestershire County Council spokesman said it was aware of the damage on the statue's plinth, located at the top of Worcester High Street, but was unable to reveal which business the vehicle was delivering to as it had not yet spoken to restaurant bosses.

But now, the county council has said it is still investigating and does not know which restaurant was involved and is instead speaking to the Cathedral Square management team.

A spokesman said: “We have been in e-mail correspondence with Cathedral Square management, and we are also in discussions with city centre CCTV operators regarding accessing the CCTV footage.”

The council said it would still be chasing the organisation responsible to cover the cost of the damage.

A Cathedral Square spokesman refused to comment.

Last week Worcester News reader Andrew Kelsall sent us images showing signs of wear on the plinth - despite it having been up for only a few weeks.

He speculated skateboarders were to blame.

Following the discovery the county council said they were investigating.

The statue was first unveiled in 1981 by the Prince of Wales.

Over the years, jokers have adorned Elgar with swimming goggles, a cap and a traffic cone, among other items.
