A WORCESTER orchestra that played its final note in June has been resurrected from the ashes.

The Salon Orchestra, originally known as the Salon Arts Orchestra, was founded in 1950 by Bridget Monahan.

Bridget Monahan, whose motto was ‘take music out to those who would not otherwise seek it’, sadly died in 2009, but her legacy lived on through the orchestra.

In 2008 the Worcester News originally reported on the orchestra facing closure, but it managed to survive and continue with a tight group of amateur players who regularly continued to rehearse and perform.

And in June it seemed the end of the road for the orchestra as they struggled to replace members who had left, with a final concert held.

But there is now new hope with the orchestra being resurrected, reforming under the leadership of new conductor Phil Davies following the retirement of previous leader Merren Anthony.

A new season is beginning next Tuesday, September 12, meeting from 7pm at Bromyard Road Methodist Church Hall on Bromyard Road.

The term runs until December 5.

The orchestra will be playing a variety of music that suits the plays, including popular classics, light concert, folk, and also modern pieces with interesting rhythms.

Geoffrey Simms, violinist with the concert, the treasurer and co-ordinator, said: "In our new form we are very keen to attract new members.

"We welcome players of all instruments but to maintain a good musical balance we are also very keen to invite and encourage upper string players of Grade III and above.

"If you have not played for some time, or, if you are looking for an opportunity to restart, or, if you are looking for a first orchestra experience - we will make you very welcome.

"There are no auditions, the only requirement is enthusiasm and loyalty to the group.

"Some of our players are, or have been, adult beginners, not quite ready yet to join the bigger amateur orchestras.

"The Salon Orchestra offers an opportunity to play in an ensemble, an opportunity to improve and even to try the odd solo spot."

It is stressed that membership is flexible with membership costs at £1.50 per evening.
