A DRUNK man lashed out a paramedic who was trying to help him after he was reported to be unconscious in a busy Worcester street.

Kelvin King admitted being drunk and disorderly in a public place when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The 59-year-old of Bromyard Road, St John's, Worcester, was arrested after ambulance staff called police following an incident in Foregate Street at around 10.20pm on August 27.

Kerry Lovegrove, prosecuting, said: "He was extremely drunk and being abusive. Paramedics had attended reports of an unconscious male lay on the floor. He lashed out and grabbed a paramedic by the arm. The paramedic did not want to make a complaint about that matter."

Mrs Lovegrove said King continued to be abusive while the police were trying to take his details. King was warned about his behaviour by officers and, when it continued, he was arrested.

King, who represented himself in court, said: "I'm sincerely sorry. It won't happen again."

King told magistrates he got depressed and had a personality disorder.

However, he added: "There's no excuse for what I did. I'm sorry. I've just got over prostate cancer."

The chairman of the magistrates bench, Keith Stokes-Smith said: "Having got drunk, you were abusive to people who work for the ambulance service which they should not have to put up with, should they?"

King, who is unemployed and on benefits, agreed that they should not.

Magistrates gave him credit for his early guilty plea and fined him £50 and ordered him to pay a £30 victim surcharge.
