A DESCENDANT of Oliver Cromwell is to give a talk to mark the anniversary of the first skirmish of the English Civil War.

The talk to commemorate the 375th Anniversary of the Battle of Powick Bridge is set to take place at the Great Hall of the Commandery in Sidbury, Worcester on Thursday, September 21 at 7pm.

Organised by the Battle of Worcester Society, the talk is the final of the Civil War Nights season.

The presentation will be delivered by local historian and descendant of Oliver Cromwell, Howard Robinson.

Howard is a well known speaker on a wide range of subjects but has put together a talk on the first engagement of the English Civil War at Powick Bridge on September 23, 1642.

The talk is based on the comments of Hugh Peters, the Parliamentary New Model Army Chaplain after the final battle of the Civil War at Worcester on September 3, 1651.

When addressing the Parliamentary army after the battle of Worcester he said: "When your wives and children ask you where you have been and what news, tell them you have been at Worcester where England's sorrows began and where they are happily ended."

Tickets are £7, £5 for Battle of Worcester Society members and £3 for students.

Tickets can be obtained from the Commandery Shop, or on the door on the night. The Commandery Cafe will be open from 6pm to 7pm.
