PARISH councillors have slammed a site earmarked to 'bring city home' as "totally unsuitable."

Warndon Parish Councillors criticised the proposal to build a ground at the Parsonage Way site in a parish council meeting on Monday night.

Last month the Worcester News reported that the Worcester City Council's policy and resources committee had unanimously agreed to endorse the principal of securing Worcester City FC a long-term home at the Parsonage Way site.

Councillors also agreed that £100,000 would be set aside to enable the development of Parsonage Way through a feasibility assessment.

Warndon Parish Council sent a strongly written letter to the committee prior to the vote and decided at Monday's meeting to write a letter explaining why the site is "unfeasible."

Speaking at Monday's meeting, Cllr Ray Morris, the chairman of the parish council said: "The site is totally unsuitable, there are already parking problems near to the hospital and these will only get worse. The site itself will not allow adequate parking facilities.

"It will also exacerbate an already gridlocked route to junction six.

"The amount of development we have had along this bypass in the last five years is scary.

"It seems an awful lot of money to spend on this feasibility assessment.

"The SWDP (South Worcestershire Development Plan) is already being ignored which is making a lot of people angry, the wider issue is the city council disregarding policies in the SWDP.

"Parsonage Way was considered for development in the plan but it was dropped."

Cllr Nick Fielden added: "The football club and the supporters trust are at loggerheads, they are not just pages apart but continents apart and I do not see how £100,000 can be spent whilst this is still the case.

"In terms of the parking issue, the (city) council has made it clear that parking will be considered on the basis of individual applications rather than cumulatively which is ridiculous."

In a letter to the policy and resources committee before they backed the plan, Cllr Morris added on behalf of the parish council: "The proposed site at Parsonage Way will not answer the need for a permanent ground for the city football club.

"The proposal to build a stadium to cater for 500 spectators is in sharp contrast to the original application of 3500 spectators and the more recent arena proposed at Perdiswell with a capacity of 4500.

"A soccer team with ambition will soon outgrow the Parsonage Way site and this is surely what we all want from Worcester City FC.

"The Parsonage Way site is a field on the edge of town, it suffers from poor drainage, it has a steep gradient on one end and has an ancient protected woodland at one end. The site is wholly inappropriate for a football ground."
