PARENTS are concerned about the safety of their children after a car smashed through a primary school fence.

The driver of the purple Volkswagen Golf reportedly left the scene after the crash outside Cranham Primary School, in Tetbury Drive, Worcester.

He ploughed through the fence in a purple Volkswagen Golf at about 7.37am this morning.

Emma Collins, aged 24, said she was worried about her six-year-old daughter, following the crash.

The mother-of-one said: “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. The kids start school at 8.45am but breakfast club started at 7.30.

“Speeding on Randwick Drive is bad. I heard a car speeding down the road this morning [at around 7.10am].

“I have never seen a car go so fast down our street.”

Despite her concerns, Ms Collins said she knew her daughter, Isabella, was safe at the school, which she described as ‘amazing’.

Emma Shuker, aged 25, of Tetbury Drive, said: "Too many cars race up and down this road, including late at night.

"I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. I'm so glad no one was hurt but next time it may not be the case."

A West Mercia Police spokesman said officers were searching the area to check on the welfare of the driver, who was described as a male wearing a light coloured hooded top.

It appears that no one was injured in the incident.

Cllr Ceri Stalker, who represents Warndon, said: “It’s shocking for parents and children. Fortunately no one was hurt.

“An adult might be able to see and move out of the way but young children are engrossed in their own little world of excitement, they don’t see danger coming like we might.

“Children are everyone’s priority. My heart goes out to the parents that are worried and upset – as a parent and a grandparent myself.”

The county councillor had previously received complaints about parking outside the school but had heard of any speeding issues.

She added: “There’s not much room to speed up there.

“Tetbury Drive has speed bumps and the school is very close to the [Cranham Drive] junction.

“Speeding has not been raised outside the school. Speeding has been raised at various other places. I’ve spoken to police about that.”

Cllr Stalker said she had ordered a vehicle activated sign for the area – in a bid to deter drivers from speeding.

The councillor added that the sign can be moved around the division and could be fitted in Tetbury Drive.

She also encouraged anyone who has concerns about speeding in the area to email her or contact the police.

Cllr Jo Hodges, who represents Warndon, said: “I am horrified to read of the crash outside Cranham Primary School this morning and relieved that no-one was hurt.

“I know that there have been parking issues around the school during morning and afternoon pick up times.”

The city councillor added that she hopes drivers will take notice of the incident and remember to drive carefully, especially around schools.

Anthony Lavell, aged 43, said the car had gone through the fence and into the school playing field.

Mr Lavell saw the scene when he dropped his 10-year-old son, Jack, off at the school this morning.

He said there were skid marks in front of the school entrance gate, which is approximately 10 metres away from the broken fence.
