STOURBRIDGE’S Oxfam shop was this week celebrating the international aid charity’s 75th anniversary.

Today (October 5) marks 75 years since the 'Oxford Committee for Famine Relief' was founded in 1942 by a small group concerned about civilians caught up in the battles of World War Two, who called for the Allied blockade to be relaxed so food could reach starving people in Greece and Belgium.

Since then the charity, which became known as Oxfam, has worked to help millions affected by disasters and to help end poverty around the world The charity’s British headquarters are still based in Oxford but it has grown into a global confederation working in more than 90 countries.

Stourbridge’s Oxfam shop has been based in the town for around 30 years and this week volunteers were celebrating the charity’s milestone birthday by selling a variety of items for 75p.

They’ve also decorated the window of the High Street shop and were set to throw a party for past and present volunteers on Thursday (October 5).

The shop, which is open six days a week – from 9am until 4.30pm, currently boasts around 32 volunteers but is always looking to recruit more.

Anyone interested can call covering manager Jackie Cartlidge on 01384 440181.
