TWO grants worth £168,000 have been awarded to the project to restore Hay Castle.

The Big Lottery People and Places Rural Programme has given £76,000, while £92,000 was granted by the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme.

The project will restore and convert Hay Castle and grounds into a leading cultural centre as well as a community resource.

The award from the Big Lottery will reduce isolation for rural residents, improve the skills of residents and visitors, provide staff and volunteers to deliver talks, workshops and education activities to bring people together and encourage learning and creativity.

Funds from the RCDF grant will contribute to staff costs and help with the creation of spaces for learning including a commercial training kitchen.

Hay Castle Trust Ltd was formed in 2011 to purchase Hay Castle and bring it back to life as a major centre for culture, arts and education.
